Integrating employment support with childcare

Give parents greater support to get back into the workplace after starting a family by integrating employment support with existing funded early learning and childcare provision. We propose to provide workshops to help parents gain employment and job-seeking skills during funded childcare hours. This will enable parents take up their funded childcare places and get back into the workplace.

Why the contribution is important

Parents who have taken a break to have children often find it difficult to get back into the workplace and may be lacking some of the skills they need to meet their employment potential. This results in more families being stuck in poverty.

Childcare provision hours don't fit with lots of jobs e.g. shift work, nursing, hospitality etc. Lots of people won't be helped by this.

It's really hard to get back into work after having been a stay at home parent - I would have loved some support like this.

This idea sounds good and might help a bit but I feel like it wouldn't be enough on its own - employers need to be more willing to provide flexible or part time employment. There's a limit to what the council can do.
